EDHEC Faculty Writes Series for Major French Newspaper

NIKKI HARLE March 18, 2008
In a series of three articles written for a major French daily, EDHEC's finance reserachers and faculty expand upon Finance & Private Banking.

Once again three EDHEC publications have been published in one of France's leading daily newspapers, La Tribune.La Tribune has a circulation of around 78,000 and more than 412,000 readers and each week, a page is especially dedicated to asset management or private banking issues.EDHEC recently published a series three articles on the general topic of Finance & Private Banking.

The first article deals with the lessons brought by Behavioural Finance for Private Bankers. If traditional finance theory states that investors are rational, the new field of behavioural finance shows that cognitive biases affect the way people makes decisions. This article, written by Daniel Haguet, Professor of Finance at EDHEC, reviews some of the results of behavioural finance that private bankers need to know about.

The second article presents the results of a research sponsored by Pictet (the century-old, Swiss private bank)and conducted by the EDHEC Risk & Asset Management Research Centre. The main point of this research was to draw lessons from the practices of intuitional investors in asset liability management (ALM) to private investors. This article shows how to manage a private investor portfolio by using ALM techniques, especially by integrating liability constraints in portfolio management.

In the third article, the authors explain how recent academic research could help professional to build financial products with downside protection and upside potential. This is called asymmetric return distribution and is suitable with investor psychology.

Authors of the second and third articles are Dr Noel Amenc and Dr Lionel Martellini, Director and Scientific Director of the of the EDHEC Risk & Asset Management Research Centre.

Daniel Haguet who specialises in private banking and behavioural finance says:

EDHEC researches are often cited in financial newspapers. The reputation of our group and the quality of our research attracts more and more newspapers. My contribution to the Behavioural finance article was aimed at giving the general public access to academic research. I hope my articles will be useful manager as this new field of Behavioural Finance is not enough applied in the private banking area.
